The Copal Tree as it’s commonly referred to as is found in Central and South America, as well as parts of East Africa and Indonesia. The hardened sap from the tree (resin) was often used in ceremonies over hot coals by Myans and Incas as well as indigenous people during sweat lodge ceremonies. The term copal derives from the word copalli which means incense.
